Breast Lift (Mastopexy): Younger and Firmer Breasts
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is a plastic surgery procedure performed to correct sagging of the breasts that occurs after aging, weight loss, childbirth or breastfeeding. By preserving or enlarging the breast volume, a more erect, firm and aesthetic appearance is achieved.
What is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift is an operation performed by reshaping the breast tissue and positioning the nipple higher. In this procedure, excess skin is removed, the breast tissue is tightened and a younger appearance is achieved.
Who Can Have Breast Lift Surgery?
This surgery is suitable for women with the following conditions
- Breast Sagging Sagging of the breasts after gravity, aging or childbirth.
- Decrease in Breast Volume: Shrinking and loss of breast volume after breastfeeding or weight loss.
- Breast Asymmetry A marked difference between the breasts.
- Aesthetic Concerns: Women who want to have perkier and fuller breasts.
Breast Lift Techniques
- Periareolar (Benelli) Method:It is suitable for patients with mild sagging.
- Incisions are made around the nipple and scars are minimal.
- Vertical (Lollipop) Method:It is used in patients with moderate sagging.
- It involves a vertical incision around the nipple and downwards.
- Inverted T (Anchor) Method:It is suitable for patients with advanced breast sagging.
- Incisions are made around the nipple, vertically and in the inframammary fold.
How is Breast Lift Surgery Performed?
The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 2-4 hours. The stages of the procedure are as follows:
- Assessment and Planning: Breast size, shape and patient expectations are evaluated.
- Making the Incisions: Appropriate incisions are made according to the chosen technique.
- Contouring of Breast Tissue and Excess Skin: The nipple is moved up and the breast tissue is tightened.
- Stitching and Bandaging: The operation is completed with aesthetic stitches.
Postoperative Recovery Process
- There may be swelling and mild pain for the first few days.
- The use of a supportive bra is recommended.
- Full recovery time varies between 4-6 weeks.
- Physical activities and heavy lifting should be limited for several weeks after the procedure.
Advantages of Breast Lift Surgery
- It provides a more youthful and erect appearance in the breasts.
- Reshapes breasts that have lost volume or sagging.
- It gives a more natural look by moving the nipple position upwards.
- It offers an aesthetic result that better adapts to body contours.
Risks and Side Effects
As with any surgical procedure, there may be some risks involved in breast lift surgery:
An experienced surgeon should be preferred to minimize these risks.
- Mild swelling and bruising.
- Temporary loss of sensation (usually resolves within a few months).
- Slight scarring (often diminishes over time).
- In rare cases, infection or asymmetry.
How Is the Degree of Sagging Determined?
What selects the technique in a breast lift is not the patient’s preference but the measurable degree of sagging.
The measure is simple: where the nipple sits relative to the inframammary fold. That fold is a fixed reference on the body.
- Mild sagging: Nipple close to the level of the fold. A limited lift may suffice and the incision pattern stays short.
- Moderate sagging: Nipple below the fold. Tissue reshaping and a more definite lift are required.
- Advanced sagging: Nipple well below the fold and pointing downward. Excess skin must be removed in a wider pattern.
- Pseudoptosis: Nipple well positioned but the lower pole emptied. This needs different planning.
The assessment is made standing upright — breast tissue shifts when lying down, so an assessment made supine is misleading. As the degree increases so does scar length; a short scar is not always possible, and forcing one means the shape will not settle as intended.
Lift Alone, or Lift With an Implant?
This is the most common question, and the answer depends on the volume expectation.
A lift gathers and raises the existing tissue; it does not add volume. Because excess skin is removed, the breast may in fact read as slightly smaller.
- Lift alone: For those happy with their current volume but unhappy with the position.
- Lift plus implant: For both position and fullness, particularly when upper-pole volume is wanted. This is the combination most often needed after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Lift plus reduction: Where there is also excess volume. See breast reduction.
Planning the two together is technically more demanding: the tissue is both gathered and given volume within it. Size selection is therefore even more critical here — large implants load newly gathered tissue and can cause sagging to recur over time.
Will the Sagging Come Back?
A lift does not make tissue immune to ageing. Gravity, skin elasticity and ageing continue to act — the result is lasting, but not fixed.
What accelerates recurrence:
- A further pregnancy and breastfeeding: These change breast tissue again. If pregnancy is planned, postponing is usually the better choice.
- Marked weight changes: Tissue volume changes and the skin stretches again.
- Not using supportive garments: Support matters, particularly with larger breasts and during sport.
- Smoking: Directly affects collagen structure and tissue healing.
- Individual skin elasticity: In some people tissue loosens more readily.
When these are managed the result holds for many years. Regular use of a supportive bra in the first months is, without argument, important for how the result settles.
